JUNEAU - A nonprofit group plans a series of scientific panels to examine the potential impacts of developing a copper and gold prospect north of Lake Iliamna in the Bristol Bay watershed.
The company behind the mine proposal, Pebble Limited Partnership, hired The Keystone Center to conduct the work.
The center's Todd Bryan says the process dates to 2008 but was slowed pending baseline studies by Pebble. He said it's coincidental the discussions were announced after the Alaska Legislature authorized its own independent study.
Bryan says the center's process is neutral, aimed at publicly analyzing information to help people make informed decisions on whether or how to proceed with a project. He says panels will include uncompensated experts.
The series launches Dec. 3.
