Flags lowered to honor Rabinowitz

ANCHORAGE - Gov. Tony Knowles ordered Alaska flags lowered to half-staff today in memory of retired Supreme Court Justice Jay Rabinowitz. The former justice died June 16 at age 74.

Knowles was to attend a memorial service for Rabinowitz today at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

"Jay Rabinowitz devoted his life to the law," Knowles said. "He began his career when Alaska was a young state. His steady, thoughtful manner resulted in a body of law that will have a lasting impact on Alaska."

Rabinowitz was born Feb. 25, 1927, in Philadelphia. He graduated from Syracuse University. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1952 and moved to Alaska. In 1959 he moved from Fairbanks to Juneau to work as a deputy attorney general. He was appointed a Superior Court judge in Fairbanks in 1960 and was sworn in as a justice five years later. Rabinowitz served 32 years on the court, including four terms as chief justice. He is survived by his wife, Ann, and his children, Mara, Judy, Sarah, and Max.

Bodies recovered from B.C. copter crash

ATLIN, British Columbia - A team of mountain-climbing specialists recovered three bodies and wreckage from a helicopter that crashed on a northern British Columbia glacier last year. However, the weekend recovery effort did not reach one of the four victims of the June 22, 2000, crash.

The helicopter plunged into a crevasse while filming a car commercial. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said a change in conditions on Llewellyn Glacier, part of the Juneau Icefield, made it possible for recovery teams to reach the wreckage. The victims were pilot Chris Guichon, 42, of Whitehorse; Ivan Webber, 28, of France; and Paul Giraurd, 47, and Mikael Glattes, 37, both of Los Angeles.
