Two Juneau women competed in the 2001 Vineman Half-Ironman Triathlon that took place July 8 in Sonoma County, Calif.
Colleen Gordon placed 57th in the 40-45 women's age group and 354th overall, while Jessica Menendez placed 98th in the 35-39 women's age group and 412th overall. Over 2,400 athletes competed in the triathlon.
"It was a blast," Menendez said. "I would definitely do it again if it wasn't for the heat."
Temperatures in California rose past the 90-degree mark for the triathlon which made the course even more grueling than normal.
"It was so hot," Menendez said. "We had to run the last five miles of the race with no shade. I would have hated to come all this way and not finish because it was too hot."
Menedez posted an overall time of 6:26:13.8, with times of 45 minutes, 36.8 seconds in the 1.2-mile swim, 3:21.12 in the 56-mile bike race and 2:12:14.9 in the 13.1-mile run.
Gordon's overall time was 6:16:06.8, with a 42:42.6 in the swim, 3:19:10.6 in the cycling and 2:03:04.5 in the running.
