Child dies in Tyonek shotgun accident

ANCHORAGE - A 6-year-old Anchorage boy is dead after a shooting accident in the village of Tyonek, according to the Alaska State Troopers.

The boy was staying with his grandfather in the village on the east side of Cook Inlet when the accident occurred.

Troopers say the victim's 12-year-old cousin was showing his .410-gauge shotgun in a bedroom of the grandfather's home about 1 p.m. Tuesday. When the 12-year-old tried to open the gun, it went off, and the charge struck the 6-year-old in the head, according to troopers.

He died in the village.

Troopers are investigating, but they say no foul play is suspected. Names aren't being released until relatives are notified, trooper said.
