The Juneau East and Juneau West all-star teams from the Gastineau Channel Little League both won on Thursday and advanced to today's semifinals in the District 2 Age 9-10 Little League Tournament in Wrangell.
The two Juneau teams will play each other at 3 p.m. in one of today's semifinals games, while top-seeded Sitka will play host Wrangell at noon in the other semifinal. The championship game will take place on Saturday.
Sitka was undefeated and earned the top seed from the seven-team tournament, while Juneau East (3-1) claimed the second seed with its 15-5 victory over Prince of Wales on Thursday. Then there was a three-way tie for the third and fourth seeds, as Juneau East, Wrangell and Petersburg all posted 2-2 records.
Juneau East was awarded the third seed and Wrangell took the fourth seed, since both teams beat Petersburg. Juneau East also beat Wrangell earlier in the tournament.
In Thursday's action, Juneau West knocked off Petersburg 12-2 in a game called after four innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Garret Cheeseman went 4-for-4 with a triple, a double and two singles, including the game-ending hit. Cheeseman's last single could have gone for a triple, Juneau West coach Geoff Whistler said, but the game ended when Juneau West scored two runs on the play.
James San Miguel was the winning pitcher for Juneau West, while Matthew Whistler had a single and walk that led to two runs (courtesy runner Ryan Kelly scored the second run) and Nathan Fosket went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Juneau East also won on the 10-run mercy rule as Damon Ludwig went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single, three RBIs and two runs scored in the victory over POW.
Brendan Daugherty struck out six of the 12 hitters he faced in his three innings on the mound, allowing one run, plus he went 2-for-2 with three runs at the plate. Ben Hotch, Andy Lawson and Chris Holloway scored two runs apiece for Juneau East.
