Mat-Su won't sue over redistricting plan

ANCHORAGE - The Matanuska-Susitna Borough will not file a lawsuit challenging the state's redistricting plan, at least for now.

Assembly members voted 4-3 Tuesday against filing their own lawsuit challenging the plan. Assembly members said they would not rule out joining a lawsuit filed by someone else.

Mat-Su assembly members are upset by the plan, which adds a third Senate district to the area but splits it with Fairbanks. The new district, which includes communities such as Lazy Mountain and Talkeetna, is too heavily weighted toward Fairbanks, they said.

Under the plan, about 53 percent of the district's residents would come from Fairbanks. Mat-Su residents would account for about 32 percent. The remaining 15 percent would be residents of the Denali Borough and unorganized areas.
