• Gastineau Channel Little League - Minor baseball (ages 9-10) district tournament: Juneau East vs. Petersburg, 3 p.m., and Wrangell vs. Juneau West, 6 p.m. All games at Miller Field near Glacier Valley Elementary School.

Saturday, July 13

• Gastineau Channel Little League - Minor baseball (ages 9-10) district tournament: Championship game, noon, and third-fourth place game, 9 a.m. All games at Miller Field near Glacier Valley Elementary School.

• Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club - End of the Road Race: Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Therese for a 10 a.m. ride to Echo Cove and back along Glacier Highway. Info: Dave Ringle, 790-7249.

• Southeast Road Runners Club - Mount Juneau Ridge Adventure Run: Meet at 7 a.m. at the Perseverance Trailhead parking lot at the end of Basin Road for a mandatory safety meeting. Race starts at 7:30 a.m. This is a strenuous 13-mile run with lots of hazards, so participants must be adequately conditioned (able to run a half-marathon in under two hours) and properly attired (no cotton). Race organizers reserve the right to ask people not to participate if they're not properly dressed. Runners new to the course should run in groups for safety purposes. The course follows Perseverance Trail to the Mount Juneau Trail and the peak of Mount Juneau (a 3,000-foot climb). It follows the ridgeline, then goes down the snow-filled Granite Creek Basin to reconnect with Perseverance Trail and the finish line. • Thunder Mountain Sports Camps - Registration is now open for these popular youth sports camps run by the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation. The Wee Soccer Camp, for ages 5-7, takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on July 15-19 at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park (registration fee $65). The Baseball Camp, for ages 6-13, takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on July 22-26 at Dimond Park (fee $70). The Advanced Soccer Camp, for ages 11-18, takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 22-26 at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park (fee $90). The Basic Soccer Camp, for ages 7-12, takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 29 to Aug. 2 at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park (fee $90). • Juneau Trail Mix work day - Meet at the bottom of the Mount Roberts Tram between 8:30-9 a.m. The group will work on the Mount Roberts Trail, above the cross, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring sturdy boots, gloves, rain gear, a snack and plenty to drink. • Southeast Football Camp - This camp for high school age students starts at 5 p.m. July 22 at Dimond Park and runs through July 27. The camp features two overnights at the Eagle River Boy Scout Camp. The cost is $90. Info: Reilly Richey, 789-4361.

• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation men's and women's volleyball registration - Team manager packets are available at the Parks and Rec office, Room 218 of the Municipal Building downtown. Team registration takes place at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8, in the Assembly Chambers, when rule changes and other new items will be announced. Teams earn one bonus victory if they have a representative at the meeting. Late registration takes place on Friday, Aug. 9, in the Parks and Rec office. • Summer physicals for Juneau-Douglas High School athletes - Sports physicals for high school athletes are available at Zach Gordon Youth Center from 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting on July 16. Carl Bausler, who works at the Juneau-Douglas High School Teen Health Center during the school year, gives the free physicals during the summers at Zach Gordon. The service is available to incoming freshmen and returning high school students only. Parents or guardians need to sign a consent form before the physical, which is available at Zach Gordon. All high school athletes need to have current physicals on file before being allowed to participate in team practices. Appointments are needed for each physical. • Juneau-Douglas High School football practice - The first football practice of the season takes place at 12:01 a.m. on Monday morning, July 29, at the Lena Point upper field. This practice is for varsity and junior varsity players. Other Crimson Bear practice times TBA. All players must have a current physical and registration form on file. • Juneau Youth Football League - The JYFL seeks someone to fill the vacant cheerleading chair on its board of directors. The chair oversees all cheerleading actvities in the JYFL prgram. No cheerleading experience is required, just a desire to work with a valuable youth program. Info: JYFL president Karen Lawfer, 364-3642.


• Youth open gym - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays (July 13, 20 and 27; and Aug. 3, 10, 17 and 24) at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Friday youth open gyms at Floyd Dryden Middle School are on hiatus until the school year starts again in the fall. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. • Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club - Weekly women's training rides take place on Wednesdays, with alternating weeks riding from downtown and the Valley.
