A parade full of the American spirit

Letter to the editor

No place was the American spirit and freedom more evident to me than this year's Fourth of July parade. This year's theme, "Freedom of Speech," was a thoughtful and patriotic response to last year's controversies, which almost resulted in needless censorship of parade entries.

It takes strength and maturity to tolerate views and opinions that are different from our own. It takes courage to stand up and defend our fellow Americans' rights to express their views, especially when they may be different from the majority. A strong, courageous and tolerant America, a free America, these are the family values demonstrated by the Fourth of July Committee. These are values welcome at any of my family's outings.

Thanks again to the committee for doing the right thing and making many of us very proud to be Americans.
