SITKA - For the first time in Sitka, the Balalaika and Domra Association of America will hold their 31st annual convention from July 19 to 25 and present a gala concert, "A Festival of Russian Music," at 7:30 p.m. July 24 at the Sitka High School Performing Arts Center.
The convention is a unique experience in Russian and East European music and dance brings together approximately 100 members and guests from across the nation and internationally. There will be a program of workshops, lectures, social events, orchestra rehearsals and concerts throughout the week.
A gala concert will include appearances by Alexander Tsygankov, prima domra soloist from Moscow, Russia; Bibs Ekkel, prima balalaika soloist from London, England; balalaika ensembles from cities throughout the United States; Sitka's New Archangel Dancers, the SitNiks; and the nearly 100-piece BDAA Festival orchestra.
This exciting event will be hosted by Sitka ensembles: New Archangel Dancers® - a group performing dances of Russia and surrounding regions; and SitNiks - a music ensemble specializing in Russian and East European music.
BDAA was founded in 1978 to perpetuate the study and the performance of Russian and East European music on traditional folk instruments - the balalaika, domra, bayan, and folk wind and percussion instruments, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and developments concerning these instruments and music. The BDAA now has an international membership of more than 400, with connections to many orchestras and ensembles worldwide.
