Unalaska man in bike race dies after falling against guardrail

ANCHORAGE - A 64-year-old Unalaska man is dead after striking his head in a fall during a bicycle race near Glennallen.

Alaska State Troopers say Robert E. Johnson Jr. was participating in the Fireweed 400 race late Saturday morning when he fell from his bicycle near mile 135 of the Glenn Highway.

Troopers say Johnson slid under the guardrail and hit his head against a steel guardrail post.

Johnson, who was wearing a lightweight bike helmet, was medvaced to an Anchorage hospital with a severe head injury.

He was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m.
