JUNEAU - Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School principal Barbara Mecum has been named the new special projects coordinator for the Juneau School District, the district announced last week.

Mecum will provide support for key initiatives within the district's strategic plan, including the development of academic standards, professional development and community partnerships.

The Board of Education voted to add the half-time position at a special board meeting recently to advance the district's newly-adopted strategic plan.

"This opportunity provides an exciting new challenge for me within the Juneau School District," Mecum said. "The position is a good fit at this time in my career and I look forward to focusing on strengthening our school system to improve achievement for all students."

Mecum is an experienced administrator who served as the principal of DZ for seven years. Prior to that she was assistant principal at the school for three years and has been with the Juneau School District since 1991.

Mecum's move creates a vacancy for the principal position at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich expects to appoint an interim principal for the 2010-2011 school year, and then conduct a full recruitment process after the new school year begins and staff and parents are available to participate. The process to find a permanent replacement could begin as early as February 2011.
