Army: Wainwright soldier died from gunshot wound

FAIRBANKS - The U.S. Army says a soldier at Fort Wainwright near Fairbanks is dead from a gunshot wound in his barracks.

The Army said in a statement that the soldier was found Saturday afternoon seriously injured with a gunshot wound.

The soldier was rushed to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He died that evening before he could be transferred a hospital in Anchorage.

The soldier was assigned to the 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team. His name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.

No other details were immediately available. The Army is investigating.
