Regarding the impasse created when the Alaska Board of Game authorizes ever expanding airborne wolf killing. This comes after Alaskans have twice voted to ground the aerial cowboys.
Sound off on the important issues at
To understand this controversy Alaskans are entitled to an answer to this fundamental question: If airborne killing of Alaska's wolves is the only available means of creating large moose and caribou populations, then why did Alaska have more of these ungulates before aircraft took to Alaska's skies?
The relevant answer is that we did not then have the proliferation of Outside hunters taking the prime breeding bulls from the herds. Native hunters have been clear that too many Outside trophy hunters are taking too many prime moose and caribou.
It is time to curb these trophy hunts and honor the will of Alaska's voters regarding the airborne killing of wolves. The current Alaska Outdoor Council-dominated Board of Game must be replaced with a board representing both the consumptive and nonconsumptive value of wildlife. The best way of realizing this is with new representation in Juneau, beginning next January.
