DragonflyTV searches for local kids for PBS show

Under a grant from the National Science Foundation, DragonflyTV - an all-science PBS television show for middle-school kids - is expanding is producing a series of seven new episodes featuring middle-school children "Going Places in Science." These special editions of DragonflyTV will feature middle-school kids learning amazing facts at science centers across the United States.

DragonflyTV will be visiting Juneau from July 29 to Aug. 2 to conduct auditions for kids ages 12 to 14 to feature on the show. Taping will take place on the Mendenhall Glacier. Participants will be asked to kayak, hike and fly in a helicopter. Interested applicants will need to contact DragonflyTV by July 18.

Children's book editors hold Editors Day workshop

Two children's book editors, Samantha McFerrin of Harcourt Brace and Deborah Wayshak, of Candlewick Press, will present an Editors Day workshop from 5:30 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Juneau Senior Center on 12th Street.

Writers interested in writing for young people, birth through young adult, are encouraged to attend. This event is sponsored by the Alaska Chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers. Cost is $60 for members of SCBWI and $100 for nonmembers. To join SCBWI, go to

Goldbelt Tour Center offers cruise to Ford's Terror

The Goldbelt Tour Center is offering a cruise from Juneau to Ford's Terror fjord, at 8 a.m. July 22.

After cruising to Ford's Terror, the boat will head to Endicott Arm for a performance of Dawes glacier, a tidewater glacier, and return to Juneau at 5 p.m.

Cost is $139 plus tax. Guests are advised to purchase tickets early, as there are limited sailings throughout the summer season. For reservations, contact the Goldbelt Tour Center at 586-8687.

Portland professionals offer dance workshops

Professional dance instructor and competitive dancer Rachel Lidskog and her dance partner, Jay Gilberg, both from Portland, will teach dance workshops on July 22 and 23 at Centennial Hall. They will teach the 3-Count Hustle at 2 p.m., the Night Club 2-Step at 3:15 p.m., and the West Coast Swing at 4:30 p.m. both days. Lidskog will also teach a Lindy Hop lesson from 7 to 10 p.m. on July 22 at the monthly Saturday evening ballroom dance at Centennial Hall.

There are no prerequisites for attending any of the classes on either day. Cost is $5 for Saturday ballroom dance, $5 for one dance workshop, or $25 for both day workshops and ballroom dance.
