JUNEAU - Joe Miller, a Republican challenging U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski in next month's primary, says he's not rejecting the debates she's proposed.
But he says the first isn't planned until Aug. 10, the day after early and absentee voting begins. Miller says the public deserves more time to hear from the candidates.
After a statewide tour during the recent congressional break, Murkowski expects largely to be in Washington until Aug. 7.
The schedule released by Murkowski's campaign has a Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce debate Aug. 10; a Kenai/Soldotna Chamber debate Aug. 11; and a debate sponsored Aug. 18 by an Anchorage public television station.
Miller's campaign characterized them as "'soft' forums" that don't allow for "real" exchanges between the candidates or widespread public exposure.
