Juneau's Gastineau Channel Little League Junior (age 13-14) All-Stars twice needed extra innings to remain undefeated in the District 2 (Southeast) Little League Tournament at Sitka's Moeller Field.
Juneau needed an eighth inning to claim a 6-5 victory over Ketchikan in Friday's opening round, then needed an eighth inning to edge Sitka 4-3 on Saturday. Junior Little League games are scheduled for seven innings.
In Friday's game, Juneau had to rally after a disastrous top of the first inning let Ketchikan take a 4-0 lead. Ketchikan had five of its seven hits in the first inning.
Juneau scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, making it 4-2 as Ryan Gorle, Matt Decker and Chris Dillon had hits. Ketchikan made it 5-2 in the top of the second as Casey Bass doubled then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Eubanks. But Juneau settled down and pitcher Zach Mixson held Ketchikan in check the rest of the game.
The GCLL All-Stars tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning as Wesley Hayden's bloop single to right scored Steven Shaishnikoff and Larry Cooper, who both singled to open the inning. Juneau won it with one out in the bottom of the eighth when Shaishnikoff drove in Decker with a single to right.
In Saturday's game, Juneau took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Shaishnikoff hit an RBI single and Dillon added a two-run single to drive home Mixson, Decker and Jason Lindley. Sitka scored once in the bottom of the first and twice in the third inning, then the game settled into a pitching duel between Decker and Sitka's Jason Koelling.
Juneau scored once in the top of the eighth inning as David Saldivar singled, then came home on a triple by Ryan Gorle. Juneau then held Sitka in the bottom of the eighth to clinch the victory.
With the win, Juneau stays undefeated in the double-elimination tournament. Juneau plays Petersburg at 6 p.m. on Monday in a winners' bracket game, with the winner of that game advancing into Tuesday's championship game. An if-necessary game will be played on Wednesday.
