Clearing up confusion about JHS & JDHS

There always seems to be much confusion to the status of the consolidation of the Juneau High School to Juneau-Douglas High School and the last class to graduate from the Fifth Street high school facility. I'm here to tell you, this is the way it went down. In this information I am going to impart, keep in mind there is a large distinction between Juneau High School (Jay Hi) and Juneau-Douglas High School (J-D Hi).

I was in the last graduating class of Juneau High School in 1955, not to be confused with Juneau-Douglas High School. Douglas High School graduated from their own Douglas School Building in 1955, the last time that was used as a high school. In 1956, my sister graduated in the first consolidated Juneau-Douglas High School. But J-D High classes of 1956 and 1957 went to school and graduated from the old Fifth Street school because the new J-D Hi building was not completed at that time.

In 1958, the new J-D Hi building was opened up on Glacier Avenue and the Class of 1958 moved in half way through the school year. The classes of 1958, 1959 and 1960 attended school in the new high school building, but still had to hold graduation exercises up at the old Fifth Street high school building as the gym in the new school was not completed.

The first Juneau-Douglas High School class to attend and graduate from the new high school on Glacier Avenue was the Class of 1961.

My class of 1955 just celebrated our 50th high school reunion, and it was fantastic. We may be old, but we still have good memories (for the time being anyhow). I dare anyone to say that the class of 1955 was not the last graduating class of Juneau High School. We are very proud of that distinction too.
