City reduces harbor dry storage fee

JUNEAU - The fee for dry storage at city harbors will be reduced by half.

The monthly fee will decrease to 50 cents per square foot from $1.

The decision was made to make storage at city-owned harbors more competitive with private operators, Port Director John Stone said.

The city will bring about an acre of dry storage space online soon at Aurora Harbor, the Juneau Yacht Club and the new Auke Bay loading facility, Stone said.

The city has not rented much dry storage space in the past, but Stone said he hopes lower rates would make it more convenient for fishermen to store items like nets, crab pots and drums close to their boats.

Stone said he expected the space to generate $5,000 to $10,000 in revenue - a small percentage of the $2 million in fees collected each year.
