Juneau resident Jason M. Skan, 26, died on July 12, 2003, at Bartlett Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. July 17, and the funeral service will be at 1 p.m. July 18 at the Juneau ANB Hall. His burial will be at the Alaskan Memorial Park.

He was born on Aug. 8, 1976, in Ketchikan to Trudy A. and Ray Skan Sr. His Tlingit name was Naaxa We'i. He was a Takdeintaan from the Sockeye House and was very proud of his Native heritage. He was a shareholder of Goldbelt Incorporated and Klawock Heenya Corp. and a member of the Juneau ANB Camp No. 2. He attended the Salvation Army Church and the Church of God.

He spent early childhood in Juneau and Klawock. In 1995 he graduated from Klawock High School, where he excelled in basketball. His family said he enjoyed basketball and played in several Gold Medal tournaments. He liked subsistence fishing and working for the family construction business. Above all else, he loved spending time with his son, "Baby Ray," the family said. Some of his close friends in Southeast Alaska were Frank Kitajima, Roy Gutherie, Adrian Gutherie and Jerry Dilts.

Friends and family said he was always kind to people, concerned about his family, quick to laugh and share jokes, and "most of all, he loved his parents."

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George E. Williams Sr. of Haines and Dora A. (Jack) Williams of Hoonah; uncle George E. Williams Jr.; and cousin Harold Loftus Jr.

He is survived by his parents, Trudy A. and Reynolds "Ray" Skan Sr.; son Reynolds J. Skan IV (whose mother is Miriam O. Burke); brothers Reynolds Skan Jr. (and wife Yvonne) and Gary C. Skan of Anchorage; and sisters Alice M. Thorne (and husband Edmond) of Salina, Kan., and Stacey L. Skan-Allen (and husband Michael) of Duluth, Minn. He is also survived by nephews and nieces, Alexandria, Reynolds Kyle and Kyrsten Skan, Edmond II and Damien Thorne, Aminda Skan, and David S. Elliott and Johanna M. Allen. His grandmother is Regina C. Skan of Ketchikan. The uncles and aunts on his father's side are Dewey Jr., John, Harvey, Patrick, Rodney, Norman, Sylvia and Marlene Skan; Mary Stack; Sandra Loftus; Mabel Clark; and Cora Gunselman. Uncles and aunts on his mother's side are Charles, Robert, Joseph, Paul "Ducky," Ernest, Darryl "DJ" and Kenneth Williams; Lorraine Shane; Bonnie J. King; Loretta Wallin; and Dorothy Zura. He also had many cousins from both sides of the family.
