Black bear sightings are up in Juneau

Posted: Wednesday, July 16, 2008

JUNEAU -The Department of Fish and Game in Juneau has been fielding more calls concerning black bears this week.

Assistant Area Management Biologist Ryan Scott said calls have increased substantially over the week from all across the city and borough.

Scott said bears finished eating newly emerged vegetation and are now waiting on berries and fish.

As a result, several are getting in to garbage containers and sheds.

He said there are several bears causing problems, especially the more curious younger bears.
