Stephanie Jo Smith died July 5, 2001, on the Seward Highway.
Stephanie was born Nov. 18, 1981, in Juneau. She had been a resident of Juneau, Haines Ketchikan and Willow.
She was very active from an early age participating in 4-H, little dribblers, and Wasilla Little League. She lettered in basketball, soccer and volleyball and was class president her freshman, sophomore and junior years. She also was executive board president her senior year at Houston High School. She was a Junior America contestant and a Miss Junior America West Coast finalist scholarship winner. Stephanie was continuing her education at UAA as a sophomore.
Her family wrote, "Stephanie was practically perfect in every way."
She is survived by her mother Tesa Kowalski and step-father Darryl Kowalski; father David Smith; brothers David, Travis and Kyle; grandparents Bob and Irene Smith, Dee and Gene Blystone, and John Kowalski; great-grandmother Marjorie Frisbie; aunts and uncles Jayme and Ernie Wittke, Richard and Karen Jardine, Allison Jardine, Tami and Mike Gilligan, Wade and Nikki Jardine, Brian and Teri Kowalski, Scott and DeAnn Blystone, Rob and Sherry Smith, Donna Caldwell, Sharon and Allen Matthews, Janell and Todd Stought, Sue and Paul England; cousins Tamesa, Trevnor, Katie, Tyler, Faith, Noah, Tara, Briana, Jeremy Joe, Art, Jorden, Norbert, Nella, Norah, Neil, Nolan, Caleb, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Kristen and Nathan.
Smith's ashes will be scattered in Clarence Strait in Ketchikan and Maui, Hawaii. A memorial service was held July 9, 2001, at Houston High School with Pastor Brian Ewing of Juneau officiating.
