Partisan paternalism

Posted: Wednesday, July 17, 2002

With his veto of geographical differential pay considerations for state employees in rural Alaska not represented by unions, Gov. Tony Knowles has once again demonstrated the strategy of dichotomy this administration has promoted so forcefully - management-controlled unions against workers, urban dwellers against rural, privileged against poor, Democrats against Republicans.

Between making state employment an unacceptable career goal for any rational professional except those appointed to continue the Knowles-Ulmer never-ending campaign for higher office - while doing everything possible to divert the seat of government from Juneau at any cost - this administration has exhibited a partisan paternalistic attitude toward Alaskans outside of the Railbelt not seen since Rev. Sheldon Jackson dedicated himself to making every Southeast Native a Presbyterian.

Let us now pray that Frank Murkowski will bring us together.
