Juneau's Gastineau Channel Little League All-Stars had to battle from behind, but they rallied for an 11-7 victory over Wrangell on Wednesday to stay undefeated in the Major Division (Age 11-12) Little League Baseball Tournament in Ketchikan.
The GCLL All-Stars were still feeling the high from Tuesday's victory over Ketchikan, and it impacted the team in the first couple of innings against Wrangell, Juneau manager Chris Monagle said.
"We were fighting from behind the whole game," Monagle said. "They (Wrangell) have some big kids and they hit the ball well. We made some mistakes and it was some pretty ugly baseball."
Wrangell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and continued to build the lead until it was 7-4 after three innings. But Jon Davis, who relieved starter Geoffrey Craig in the third, shut the door on Wrangell, giving Juneau a chance for the rally.
"We talked about it after the third inning, and we got a little more serious after that," Monagle said. "We'd scored four runs in the first three innings, and we felt we could score some more because our hitting has been pretty good."
Juneau still trailed 7-6 in the fourth when pinch hitter Josh Mayer hit a two-run single to give the GCLL All-Stars their first lead of the game.
Sean Bavard led Juneau with three runs scored and two doubles, while Davis hit two doubles and scored twice. Collin Monagle went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Craig went 3-for-3 with one run.
Juneau, 4-0 in round-robin pool play, will take on Haines at 3 p.m. today, then has a bye on Friday. The GCLL All-Stars will conclude the round-robin portion of the tourney against Petersburg on Saturday.
The top four teams in the standings will advance to Sunday's semifinals, with the championship game on Monday. The District 2 champion will head to Fairbanks for the state tournament July 26-30.
