• Gastineau Channel Little League baseball - Junior League Division (Age 13-14) Alaska District 2 tournament: Placement games: Fifth seed (Petersburg-Wrangell) vs. sixth seed (Prince of Wales), 11 a.m.; Third seed (Sitka) vs. fourth seed (Haines), 2:30 p.m.; First seed (Juneau) vs. second seed (Ketchikan), 6:30 p.m. (first game of best-of-three championship series); all games at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park baseball diamond.

• Juneau Alpine Club - Juneau to Haines paddle, this is a high-challenge trek for experienced paddlers able to paddle 20 miles per day. The trip is scheduled to run through Sunday, but allow an extra day for bad weather. Bring a kayak, safety gear and camping gear. Please RSVP with the trip leader. Saturday, July 19

• Juneau Rowing Club - Inaugural regatta: Up to 12 rowers will compete on a 2,000-meter course in the Gastineau Channel that parallels Egan Drive. The starting line is at the two-mile green navigational marker and the finish line is at the Juneau Yacht Club parking lot. Three heat races are scheduled for 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon, with the finals at 5 p.m. Juneau Rowing Club members with local rowing experience are invited to participate and race fans are encouraged. • Gastineau Channel Little League baseball - Junior Division State Tournament: District 1 champion (Southcentral) vs. District 2 champion (Southeast), 3 p.m. at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park baseball diamond. District 3 champion (Interior) has bye.

• Southeast Road Runners Club - JRC/The Alaska Club Governor's Cup 5K and Kids' Half- and One-Mile Runs: Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the downtown court house for a 9 a.m. race start. The five-kilometer course winds through town and finishes behind the Red Cross office near Bartlett Hospital. There will be half-mile and one-mile races for kids at 10 a.m. near the finish line. • Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club - Auke Rec to the End of the Road Bike Race: Meet at 9:15 a.m. at the Auke Recreation Area to register, then ride your bike to the Auke Bay Ferry Terminal for a 10 a.m. race start. This race will follow Glacier Highway from the ferry terminal to the end of the road (Echo Cove) and back with a finish line at the totem pole at Auke Recreation Area. The course is 52 miles and this is a preview of the Tour of Juneau road race. Info: Chris Chiles, 789-5138.

• Cowboy Action Shoot - Meet at 9 a.m. at the Hank Harmon Rifle Range, with shooting at 10 a.m. Side events for .22-caliber lever-action rifles and Derringer pistols after the main events. New shooters and townfolk welcome. Cowboy attire requested. Info: Evengood Guysmiss (John Barnett), 364-2514.

MEETINGS / CLINICS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Southeast Football Camp - This camp is for high school age players interested in playing varsity or junior varsity football for the Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears. The camp begins Monday, July 21, at Dimond Park, with registration at 4:30 p.m. and camp start at 5 p.m. The camp will include three overnights at the Eagle River Methodist Camp starting on Wednesday, July 23. The cost of the camp is $95, including meals, and checks are payable to Southeast Football Camp. Info: JDHS coach Reilly Richey, 789-4361.

• Juneau Youth Football League registration - JYFL representatives will be at Mendenhall Mall from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on two upcoming Saturdays - July 19 and 26 - for football and cheerleading registration. Registration is open to youths age 8-18. The sign-up table will be located across from Bullwinkle's Pizza. The JYFL also is looking for assistant coaches for the Junior and Senior age divisions. Football coaching experience and/or recent high school-college playing experience is preferred. Info: K. • Juneau-Douglas High School cross-country running team - The first practice of the season is at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, July 28, in the Marie Drake Gym. All participants must have a current physical exam on file before they are allowed to practice. Summer running programs are in progress now, so prospective runners should contact the coaches as soon as possible. • Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation men's and women's volleyball registration - Team manager packets are available at the Parks and Recs office, Room 218 of the municipal building downtown. Team registration takes place at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, in the Juneau Assembly Chambers, with late registration Friday, Aug. 8, in the Parks and Recs office. League play opens on Sept. 2. • Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Friday night youth open gyms at Floyd Dryden Middle School have been canceled due to lack of participants. • Juneau Youth Football League cheerleading conditioning sessions - The JYFL cheerleading program is holding conditioning sessions for all girls interested in becoming varsity or junior varsity high school cheerleaders. Sessions are held from 6-8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Glacier Valley School gym. Tryouts for the cheerleading squad will be held on July 28. Info: Toni Petrie, 789-5983.

• Juneau Disc Golf Association weekly Wednesday doubles - Meet at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday at the Dimond Park Disc Golf Course for this event. There is a random pick for doubles partners, and players use scramble-play format (play the best shot between the partners). • Treadwell Arena summer programs - During July, the arena is available for drop-in basketball from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays and from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays; drop-in in-line skating from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4-7 p.m. on Mondays, and from 3-5 p.m. on Fridays; drop-in tennis from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays; and drop-in in-line hockey from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rental times also are available from 7:30-10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, and from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In-line skating and basketball fees are $4 for adults, $2 for youth, $1.90 for seniors. Hockey and tennis passes are $5 for adults, $4 for youth and $3 for seniors. Court rentals for tennis and basketball are $20 per hour. Facility rental is $75 per hour or $500 for seven or more hours. • Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
