Waterfront vision now fading away

Posted: Friday, July 17, 2009

I am saddened to read that the Planning Commission has failed to follow the Comprehensive and Waterfront Plans in approving the Mental Health Trust's request to build a 75-foot office building at the sub-port near the downtown Coast Guard station.

Years ago, as a community, we recognized that our waterfront should be used for the public in special ways - not for parking garages or office buildings. How much better it would be to have a park and children's museum or maritime park.

I am especially concerned about the proposed building height. The community has long supported height restrictions for waterfront buildings. The proposed building will be higher than any other waterfront building. Let's make sure that no structures violate our building standards. It will be much better for all of us to be able to enjoy the waterfront as envisioned in our Comprehensive and Waterfront Plans.
