Warm weather, melting ice swells Matanuska River

SUTTON - Warm weather and melting glacier ice is swelling the Matanuska River, eroding property north of Sutton and threatening the Glenn Highway and several homes.

The Anchorage Daily News reported that water levels were predicted to continue to rise, making the problem worse.,

When Forrest and Betty Blubaugh bought their land 15 years ago, it was a mile from the river. Now, the river is 40 feet from their back door.

Matanuska-Susitna Borough officials used federal money in 2006 to buy properties threatened by erosion, but planner Frankie Barker said there's no more buyout money. He said that with the recession and oil prices relatively low, little help is on the horizon.
