North Slope oil rig catches fire

Posted: Thursday, July 19, 2001

ANCHORAGE - Two Prudhoe Bay workers escaped serious injury when an oil rig caught fire as it was being moved.

The workers, employed by Nabors Alaska Drilling, were thrown in the accident, which occurred about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday when one of the rig's massive tires exploded. Jim Brown, a Nabors official, said the tire burst about the time hydraulic fuel that powers the drive system caught fire, triggering the explosion of a second tire.

The two workers, who were flown to Anchorage for medical treatment, were among about a dozen transporting the rig. One had minor injuries and the other was shaken but not injured, Brown said.
