Tourists on an Alaska Travel Adventures raft paddle down the rain and meltwater-swollen Mendenhall River on Monday near the Back Loop bridge. They were about to enter a section of rapids just below the crossing. Water levels in the river and at Mendenhall Lake on Monday were the highest of the summer so far, according to hydrologic gauges. Monday's river stage was 9.4 feet, compared with 8 feet a week ago. River guides said the high water made for a fast ride and created new sets of waves.
