Guv's Cup racers have a ball

Posted: Sunday, July 20, 2003

Just about everyone who ran in Saturday's 26th annual Governor's Cup race had a ball.

Danny Tomaro had three.

Tomaro, a Wisconsin resident visiting Juneau this weekend to attend a wedding, completed the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course from Dimond Courthouse downtown to Salmon Creek while "joggling" - running and juggling three balls.

Meanwhile, at the front of the pack, Shawn Miller won his fourth straight Governor's Cup, finishing with a time of 15 minutes, 44 seconds - nearly a full minute ahead of second-place finisher Dave Pusich (16:43). Brandy Anderson repeated as women's champion, covering the course in 19:39.

Eighty-three individuals ran in Saturday's race, which wound along Calhoun Avenue and 12th Street before heading out Glacier Highway and the footpath along Egan Drive to finish near the office of the American Red Cross.

There were also two children's races on Saturday. Results and photos from those events will run later this week in the Empire.

Tomaro, whose daughter Anna Rose also ran Saturday, finished the course in exactly 25 minutes, good for 37th place among the 45 runners in the men's field. He's been juggling for about eight years, and is part of the Oregon (Wis.) Juggling Club. He only recently started to try out "joggling."

He said it is relatively easy to do other things - like talking or walking - while he juggles. To aid in navigating the course at running speed, Tomaro enlisted friend Paul DeSloover of Juneau to run along and alert him to curbs and other obstacles. Over the entire course, he had just five dropped balls.

Saturday's race was sponsored by JRC/The Alaska Club.
