Allen Marine of Sitka has purchased Alaska Ship Chandlers, mainly to acquire the Suzuki outboard motor dealership, company officials said Monday.
"They were a really big success for us in Sitka, and we thought we could pass along that product and customer service in Juneau," said Eric Majeski, manager of the Juneau store.
The tour company bought Alaska Ship Chandlers from Pete Bernstein of Juneau on May 28. Bernstein had been wanting to sell the business for some time so he could retire, Allen Marine Vice President Jamey Cagle said Monday.
The store, near the Douglas Bridge, offers marine equipment and repairs. It is now called Allen Marine Sales and Service.
Allen Marine, a family-owned business since 1967, operates a tour business, boat building operation and retail stores in Sitka and Juneau. It employs six people at the Juneau store downtown and service shop in the Mendenhall Valley. That is about double the number of employees when Bernstein owned Alaska Ship Chandlers.
Opening a store in Juneau was logical because Allen Marine operates a day-cruise business in town, Majeski said. It also has tour operations in Sitka and Ketchikan.
Bernstein had the only Suzuki outboard motor dealership in Juneau. Only one store can sell a particular brand of specific equipment per municipality due to manufacturer requirements. Manufacturers do not want one of their dealers putting another out of business in the same town, Cagle explained.
The Juneau store also sells Tohatsu two-stroke outboard motors. Allen Marine plans to begin selling Yamaha snow machines, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and small gasoline-powered generators. Customers also will be able to get these products serviced, Majeski said.
