Thorne Bay crash kills one

Posted: Friday, July 21, 2000

A Thorne Bay man died in a floatplane crash Thursday evening near Thorne Bay.

Timothy L. Wyatt, 39, was the sole occupant, pilot and owner of the Cessna 180, which crashed on the rocks of Piggy Cove three miles southwest of Thorne Bay about 8 p.m., Alaska State Troopers said. Troopers, the U.S. Coast Guard, Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad and local residents responded to the scene.

The crash is still being investigated. Representatives of the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to arrive at the site by this afternoon. The NTSB and the state medical examiner have requested an autopsy.

It was unknown this morning if Wyatt had filed a flight plan, troopers said. Dangerous rocks and dwindling daylight prevented the recovery of his body Thursday.
