East beats West in Little League Majors

Juneau East got the best of Juneau West, 5-3, on Saturday in their game at the District II Majors (ages 11-12) Little League baseball tournament in Wrangell.

Juneau East is now 6-1 and has concluded round-robin play in the tourney. Juneau West is now 5-1 and will face Ketchikan today in its final round-robin match. Both teams will move on to elimination round play on Monday.

In Saturday's game, Juneau West jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first half-inning of play, and Juneau East answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first.

Then the two teams shut each other down for the next three innings of play, and the score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the fifth, when Juneau East tacked on three runs to take the lead for good.

On Friday, Juneau East defeated Wrangell, 11-0, in a game called early on the 10-run mercy rule. Zach Heppner pitched a complete game for Juneau East, and 11 of the 12 Juneau players had hits.

Heppner hit two doubles for Juneau, and Jon Jeans, Faifo Levale and Jonathan Davis added one apiece. Sam Clark and Shawn Ibesate had triples for Juneau.

Juneau West beat Haines, 12-0, on Friday, on a shutout pitched by Sam Greely, Buzz Ward and Ryan Staton.

Shane Rud had a three-run homer for Juneau West.

In the Senior (ages 15-16) Little League baseball tourney in Petersburg, the Gastineau Channel Little League All-Stars will play today against the winner of Saturday's North Pole-Kenai match.
