Friday, July 22

• Juneau Freewheelers bicycle club - Informal time trial: Meet at 6 p.m. at the False Outer Point Recreation Area parking lot for a 6:30 p.m. race start. This informal event features a 10.2-mile course along the North Douglas Highway. Info: Dave Walker, 586-1958.

Friday-Sunday, July 22-24

• Little League Senior Softball State Tournament - Gastineau Channel Little League hosts the Alaska State Senior Softball Tournament this weekend. It'll be a best-of-three series between two teams. Game one will be Friday at 5 p.m., game two will be Saturday at 1 p.m. and game three, if necessary, will be Sunday at 1 p.m.

Saturday, July 23

• Southeast Road Runners club - Mount Roberts Tram Run: Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the lower station of the Mount Roberts Tramway for a 9 a.m. race start. The course is about 3 miles, with a climb of about 1,800 feet on the Mount Roberts Trail. After running up the mountain, there are tram tickets to get back down. Sunday, July 24

• Juneau Junior Golf Club - One Club Championship Golf Tournament: The Juneau Junior Golf Club is hosting a one club tournament at Mendenhall Golf Course on July 24. There will be men's and women's divisions with prizes awarded for first through third place in each division. There will also be closest to the pin awards and a random drawing for roundtrip air tickets to Gustavus or Haines. Also a 2005 Ford Ranger Supercab 4x4 will be awarded for the first hole in one on the 9th hole. The fee is $30 and will benefit junior golf. • Southeast Road Runners club - Wes Coyner Memorial Duathlon: Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the False Outer Point Recreational Area parking lot for a 9 a.m. race start. This three-stage event along the North Douglas Highway features a 2-mile run, a 16-mile bike and another 2-mile run. There are competitions for both individuals and teams. MEETINGS / CLINICS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Major League Baseball - Open tryouts: Major League Baseball will be conducting free open tryouts in Anchorage on July 30 at 9 a.m. at Mulcahy Stadium for players ages 15 to 23. Players are required to bring their own gloves, spikes, wooden bats, catcher's gear, etc. To participate, a liability waiver and release form must be signed by the player and parent or legal guardian. • Mendenhall Golf Course - Equipment sale and One Club Tournament: A used golf club and equipment sale will be held starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 24, to benefit the junior golf program. Please bring clubs, bags, apparel and balls to the Mendenhall Golf Course to have items checked in for the sale. The One Club Tournament will also take place this day. • Frank Shorter Running Clinic - Frank Shorter, 1972 Olympic marathon champion, will be hosting a running clinic at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, at JRC/The Alaska Club. The fee is $5 for all Southeast Road Runners or JRC members or $10 for non-members. Info: Jamie Bursell, 789-5997.

• LIFE On The Move Volleyball - Registration is still being accepted for the July 25th-28th camp for middle school students and the Aug. 1-2 camp for high school students. The middle school camp will take place from 1-4:30 p.m. each day at the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. The high school camp will take place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. each day at the Dzantik'i Heeni gym. • Cheerleading conditioning - Meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights during July at Glacier Valley School. Conditioning will begin for all girls interested in tryout out to be a Crimson Bears JV or Varsity high school football cheerleader. Team tryouts will be in early August for the upcoming season.

• Juneau Parks and Recreation adult volleyball registration - The Juneau Parks and Recreation team registration takes place at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, in the Assembly Chambers. Men's and women's volleyball team manager packets are available at the Parks and Rec office, located on the second floor of the municiple building, room 218. Info: 586-5226

• Thunder Mountain sports camps - Thunder Mountain sports camps feature a positive and fun environment and coaching from local coaches, high school coach and college coaches from throughout the country. The wee soccer camp runs July 11-15 for $75, the regular soccer camp runs July 18-22 for $100, the advanced soccer camp runs July 25-29 for $100 and the baseball camp runs July 25-29 for $75. • Juneau Women's Golf League - The Juneau Women's Golf League is looking for experience and new players interested in playing golf. The league meets every Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Mendenhall Golf Course. There will be a shotgun start. Golf club rentals are available and cost is $9.45 per round, plus tax. • Evening masters swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Participants must be able to swim crawlstroke and backstroke. Info: Augustus Brown swim pool, 586-5325.

• Treadwell Arena schedule - The Treadwell Arena will be running four half-day (8 a.m.-noon), week-long summer camps for youth ages 6-12. Available camps: Camp 3: Survivor Week (July 11-15). Camp 4: Explore the Outdoors, (July 18-22). Please check our Web site for more information and registration forms. Summer drop-in activities will be as follows: Drop-in gym is Monday-Friday, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Drop-in Floor Hockey/Gym is Monday and Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., and Drop-in Roller Hockey is Tuesday and Thursday, 6-8 p.m. Schedules for summer drop-in activities are also available on our Web site. • Juneau Archery Club youth shooting - Archery shooting is held on Friday nights, with sessions at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. • Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
