I am writing my fellow Empire readers to encourage them to vote for Mark Begich for Senate. We need a senator who will work to end the occupation of Iraq while supporting service members and their families. Mark Begich will do both.
Mark Begich will heed the voices of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a majority of Iraqi parliament members and other Iraqis who have asked us for a timetable to end our occupation. Aside from honoring the wishes of the Iraqi people, Mark Begich wants to end the occupation of Iraq so we shift our attention back where it belongs: fighting al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere.
In order to fight at their best, soldiers, sailors and airmen and their families need the most support we can give them. If elected, Mark Begich will help ensure that fighting men and women have new equipment to replace equipment wrecked in Iraq. He will work at investing in necessary training for our troops and providing our service members and veterans with the full education and medical benefits they deserve from the country they served. And by helping to end the occupation of Iraq, Mark Begich will be able to help this country give what service members most need to be effective - more time with their families - not more extended tours and stop-loss orders.
Mark has already done what he can do for veterans from Anchorage. As mayor, he appointed a city military and veterans coordinator and mandated a city hiring preference for veterans. This November, let's help him expand his work for veterans by putting him in the U.S. Senate.
