Lloyd K. "Buck" Smith died July 18, 2002, in Elfin Cove.
Smith was a Korean War veteran and studied law at the University of Washington. In the early 1950s he came to Alaska on a family fishing boat and, after seeing Elfin Cove, declared to his sister that he would spend the rest of his life there, which he did.
He fished his own boat, the Tuna, a salmon troller, for many years in Southeast Alaska. When he retired he became the handyman of Elfin Cove, running snow plows, delivering freight and mail to airplanes and assisting visitors.
His friends and family said his real work was to "live by the side of the road and be a friend to man." They also said he was "the heart of Elfin Cove."
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Lloyd Smith.
He is survived by his sisters, Yvonne Hurley of San Bernardino, Calif., and Hope Bowers of Richardson, Texas.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Elfin Cove.
