Midsummer's Night 10K and 1-mile - The Southeast Road Runners present the annual Midsummer's Night Race on Tuesday, July 24, at 6 p.m. There will be a 10-kilometer race and a 1-mile race, both starting and finishing at the False Outer Point parking lot. Pre-registration is at both JRC/The Alaska Club locations, Nugget Alaskan Outfitter or Pavitt Health & Fitness. Race-day registartion is at 5:30 p.m. the night of the race. Thunder Mountain Sports Camps - Juneau Parks and Recreation is still taking registration forms for the Thunder Mountain Sports Camps. The Thunder Mountain Baseball Camp will take place July 23-27 for boys and girls ages 6-13. The fee is $75 and the camp will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Dimond Park. The Advance Soccer Camp will also take place July 23-27. The camp is for boys and girls ages 11-13. Sealaska Heritage Institute basketball camp -The Sealaska Heritage Institute will sponsor basketball camps in Juneau and Angoon for kids who are Sealaska shareholders or descendants. The purpose is to provide a week of fun but intensive instruction in the fundamentals of basketball while incorporating Tlingit language and culture. The Juneau camp is for kids in grades 6 to 8 and will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Frank Maier Memorial Marathon and Douglas Island Half Marathon - The annual marathon and half-marathon will take place on Douglas Island at Savikko Park. The marathon will start at 7 a.m. while the half-marathon will kick off at 9 a.m. There will be starts an hour earlier for slower runners. This is a USTAC-certified marathon. Juneau Parks and Recreation Volleyball - The Juneau Parks and Recreation men's and women's volleyball team manager packets are available at the Parks and Recreation Office on the second floor of the municipal building, Room 218. Team registration will take place Thursday, August 9, at 5:15 p.m. in the Assembly Chambers. Late registration will be taken on Friday, August 10, at the Parks and Recreation office. Treadwell Arena ice reopening - Treadwell Arena will open August 1 with ice. Rentals for the month of August will begin at noon Friday, July 13, in person at Treadwell Arena. Two rental hours allowed per person and a wait list will be taken. Unrented ice will be made available to those on the wait list. The August ice schedule will be available online July 20. Look for open stakes, stick and puck sessions, learn to skate and play programs and 4-on-4 leagues. Treadwell Arena will be open on a Wednesday-Sunday basis August 1 through September 1. Juneau Youth Football League registration - Registration for the Juneau Youth Football League begins Saturday, July 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the football field gear shed at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. Registrations will be taken every Saturday through July at the gear shed. In order to register, the following documents must be provided: Completed and signed registration form, participant's sports physical signed by physician or physician's assistant and the registration fee. Speed and agility camp - Pavitt Health and Fitness is holding a speed and agility camp for athletes ages 10-18 taught by Cassandra Hajicek, B.S. in Exercise Science/Sports. Each camp is Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon. Minicamps will run through August 2. Cost is $80 plus tax for the four-day session. The camp is open to the public. Volunteer soccer coaches needed - Juneau Parks and Recreation is looking for volunteer coaches for the upcoming Outdoor Soccer Program. The season will run from July 7 to September 15. Persons knowledgeable about soccer, who enjoy working with youth, are encouraged to call Parks and Rec or drop by the office for more information. JDHS turf field available - The turf field by Juneau-Douglas High School is available for community use. The charge for reserving the field is $5 per hour for non-profit youth groups, $10 per hour for non-profit adult groups and $15 per hour for all other groups. Tuesday Best Ball Golf League - The 2007 Tuesday Best Ball Golf League, a fun golf competition for men and women, starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Mendenhall Golf Course. Teams of golfers will compete for points in a best-ball format with cash prizes at season's end. Players pay green fees and a $5 weekly entry fee. No registration is necessary. Kids Camp at JRC/The Alaska Club - The annual Kids Camp at the JRC/The Alaska Club will take place from June 4 to August 17 for kids ages 5-12. Juneau Women's Golf League - The Juneau Women's Golf League will play every Thursday, with a shotgun start at 6 p.m. at the Mendenhall Golf Course. The league is looking for women interested in playing golf. No prior experience is necessary to participate. Clubs and carts can be rented at the course. League play will be every Thursday at 6 p.m. through August 16. Golfers should contact the course if weather is questionable. Dzantik'i Heeni open gym - Community Schools in cooperation with the PEP grant is sponsoring open gyms at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School on Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. for youth in grades 6-12. There is no charge and youth are encouraged to bring a basketball or volleyball. Info: Community Schools, 523-1774.
Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Evening masters swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
