Juneau Junior softball squad beats A-O-R for state crown

Juneau's Madison Massey, Andi Doerflinger and Sasha Frye teamed up on the mound and shut down Abbott-O-Rabbit in Anchorage on Tuesday as the Gastineau Channel Little League All-Stars successfully defended the Alaska State Junior Division (Age 13-14) Little League softball title with a 10-3 win.

With the win, Juneau earned a spot in the Western Division Tournament in Portland, Ore., later this week. The GCLL All-Stars will open play against Idaho on Saturday.

For the second straight night against Abbott-O-Rabbit, Juneau went with the same trio of pitchers. Massey pitched the first two innings, Doerflinger came in for the middle three and Frye closed out the final two innings - including striking out two A-O-R batters with the bases loaded for the final two outs.

"Each player knew what their role was," Juneau manager Steve Frye said. "It was a great team effort. We used all 12 girls, and everybody did a great job."

Juneau's offense was led by a three-RBI triple from Doerflinger in the fourth - she hit it just inside third base, and the ball rolled all the way to the wall - and Sammy Roguska hit a two-RBI double in the fifth. Juneau went 5-for-5 on stolen bases in the game.
