Former Juneau resident McKinnon Behrends died July 8, 2008, in Portland, Ore. He was 22.
"Mac, so big in life, has left an enormous void in his death," his family said. "As he was often heard to say in the last year, he was 'livin' the dream' and living it the way he did everything - full on."
Born in 1986 in Anchorage, he lived in Juneau until 2005. He was a 2004 graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School and was working over the last year at "The Dixie" in Portland, while attending Portland Community College. He loved his job and all his friends in Portland.
"Mac is survived by so many people who loved him," his family said.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dutch and Lucille Behrends; and cousin, Jason Cunningham.
He is survived by his parents, Dick and Candy Behrends; sister, Amanda Behrends; grandparents, George and Pat Venema; uncles, Dave and Tom Behrends, George and Chris Venema, Bill Cleveland, Andy Bakke and Mike Hilley; aunts, Carole Bakke, Joanne Behrends, Angie Behrends, Judy Croasmun, Debra Cleveland, Laura Hoyt, Mary Venema and Linda Hilley; cousins, Stacey Cunningham, Tia Hernandez, Tawny Letterman, Wendy Hanson, Krissy Bakke, Mike, Justin and Jessie Behrends, Russell and Becky Hoyt, Andrew, Nick and Jamie Venema, Jake Venema, Katy and Torie Cleveland, and Morgan and Taylor Hilley; and many friends in both Juneau and Portland.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. July 27 at the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council.
"Please join us, and in honor of the colorful guy he was, please don't wear black," his family said.
