Former Juneau resident Charles "Charlie" Alan Lewis, of Pullman, Wash., died July 18, 2009, at Avalon Care Center in Pullman, after a long illness. He was 35.
Born Oct. 27, 1973, in Juneau to Earl C. and Helene A. Lewis, he attended Juneau public schools and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1992. From 1993 to 1995, he attended the University of Alaska Anchorage. During high school and before college, he worked for several Alaska employers including Price Plus, Alaska Airlines and the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education.
A true Alaskan, he loved fishing, hunting and hiking and was very active in sports. In 1996, he was debilitated with a hereditary disease that landed him in a wheelchair and, eventually, in a care facility. From 1997 to 2007 he lived at St. Ann's-Wildflower Court in Juneau.
In 2007, he moved with his mother to Pullman, where he lived at Avalon Care Center. He was loved by many and always had a smile on his face and a cheerful attitude. He will truly be missed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earl C. Lewis Jr.; grandparents, Richard and Sylvia Iverson, and Earl C. Lewis Sr. and Hildreth Lewis, all of Juneau.
He is survived by his mother, Helene Arthur, of Pullman; sister, Carla Havens and husband, Joe, of Gap Mills, W.Va.; step-sister, Sheri Flugel and husband, Bill, of Palouse, Wash.; grandfather, Hal Arthur and wife, Virginia, of Canby, Ore.; uncle, David Arthur and wife, Cheryl Gunselman, of Pullman; aunt, Lily Kaparos and husband, Steve, of California; aunt, Rose Carlson and husband, Mel; uncles Glen Lewis and wife, Kathy, and Ivan Lewis and wife, Debbie, all of Washington; and 19 cousins and many friends.
A memorial service, celebrating his life will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Juneau. A reception will follow in St. Paul's Parrish Hall. Interment of ashes will take place at Alaskan Memorial Park Mortuary and Crematory.
