Emergency Programs Manager appointed

JUNEAU - The city's avalanche forecaster has been appointed Emergency Programs Manager, City Manager Kim Kiefer announced Wednesday.

Tom Mattice was hired in November to forecast avalanche danger for neighborhoods situated in slide paths.

Former Emergency Programs Manager Mike Branum quit in February to work as the operations manager for Fairbanks-based Warbelow's Air Ambulance.

Since Juneau's largest natural disaster threat would be an avalanche, Mattice's education and training in that area makes him uniquely qualified for the position, Kiefer said.

Mattice will continue to handle avalanche forecasting duties along with his new role coordinating emergency preparedness programs for the city.
