Posted: Monday, July 24, 2000

The Gastineau Channel Little League Majors softball team claimed the first game of the state championship series Sunday with a 8-4 victory over Knik.

Torie Powers pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and three walks, and smacked a key two-run double in Juneau's five-run fourth inning.

Knik loaded the bases with no out in the second inning when Juneau got a force out at first and a throwback to home for the double play. Powers then struck out the next batter to end the Knik threat.

The best-of-three series resumes today at 5 p.m. at Melvin Park. Due to rain, the Juniors state championship between GCLL and Knik was postponed in the fourth inning with the score tied 0-0. The game resumes today at 3 p.m. with the second game of the best-of-three series at 7.

Minors win Southeast

Blaine Shaishnikoff pitched a complete game with three strikeouts to lead the Gastineau Channel Little League Minors (aged 9-10) to the District 2 championship with a 4-1 defeat of Petersburg Sunday.

Shaishnikoff allowed just two hits in the game, and went 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI.

The GLCC minors went undefeated in the tournament, the first for aged 9-10 All-Stars. The tournament was the end of the season for minor-level Little Leaguers.

Other teams in the tournament were Wrangell and Ketchikan.

Juneau West to play for title

Juneau West downed the Sitka All-Stars 4-2 to advance to the championship game of the District 2 Junior (11-12) Little League Tournament in Craig on Sunday.

Zach Anderson's pinch-hit line drive with two outs and two strikes scored two runs in the fourth inning to key Juneau West's victory.

Juneau West plays undefeated Ketchikan at 5 p.m. today. Should Juneau win, an if-necessary game will be played Tuesday.
