Juneau teams sweep competition

Juneau teams took home three out of of four trophies from the Kake Dog Salmon Festival on Saturday.

One People women's team of Juneau won first place in the Great Tlingit Canoe Race with a time of 11 minutes, 6 seconds. The team's time for the 3-mile course in the ocean was only 1 minute behind the winning men's team. The captain was Crystal Fields.

In the men's canoe race, a mixed Juneau team won first. The team was made up of the Renegades and the Tlingit Warriors, with Victoria Johnson on the rudder. The captain was William Brown.

First place: One People of Juneau.

Second place: Kake Fallen Angels.

Third place: SEARHC of Juneau.

Fourth Place: Kake Community Team No. 2


First place: Mixed Juneau Team

Second place: One People of Juneau.

Third place: SEARHC of Juneau.

Fourth place: Kake.

The annual Kake festival was kicked off by the marriage of Ann Chilton and Brian Cox of One People Men's and Women's Canoe Team. One hour after the boat landed in Kake, the men and women of both teams participated in the wedding by creating an arch with their handmade traditional paddles.

Another member of the team, Tom Wehnes, adopted brother to the bride, officiated the wedding while team captain Doug Chilton, brother to the bride, gave Ann away.

Other festival events included a fish-tote race, a 5-kilometer race, a cooking contest, children's races and a 1950s and '60s concert.
