Elizabeth Shutt of Juneau and Ryan Sparks of Kansas City, Kan., were married on May 18, 2002, in Juneau at the Chapel by the Lake log cabin. A reception was held afterward at Glacier Gardens.
The bride is the daughter of Richard and Margaret Shutt of Juneau. She attended Valley Chapel Christian School, Floyd Dryden Middle School, Juneau-Douglas High School until her senior year and graduated in 1996 from Diamond High School in Anchorage. She enlisted in the Marine Corps on Nov. 11, 1997, and was honorably discharged May 11, 2002, as a sergeant.
Ryan Sparks is the son of Cheri Sparks of Kansas City, Kan. He attended Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic School and graduated in 1992 from Shawnee Mission High School. He is an alumnus of the University of Kansas with a bachelor of arts in political science. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on May 10, 1997, and was honorably discharged June 10, 2002.
Ryan and Elizabeth were on a routine deployment to the Persian Gulf with the 15th MEU aboard the USS Peleliu, and on Sept. 11 were routed to the Arabian Sea. Both were deployed ashore into Pakistan and Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
The best man was the groom's brother, Adam Sparks, and Todd Bennett, Wesley Shutt, Rick Shutt and Fred Sayre were groomsmen. The bridesmaids were Catherine Sayre, Wendy Durkin, Sabrina Romo, April East and Toni Verseau. The flower girl was Naomi Parmelee and the ring bearer was Jacob Jerue. Ryan's mother Cheri Sparks and sister Karie Sparks also attended.
The couple will make their home in Kansas City, Kan.
