Rotary sends Alaskans to other countries

Posted: Tuesday, July 25, 2000

Juneau's Rotary clubs are accepting applications for Ambassadorial Scholarships. One recipient will present a slide show Wednesday on her experiences, to provide a better idea of what the scholarship program offers.

Two types of scholarships are available. One is for full-time study for one regular academic year, usually nine months, in the country and area of study of the applicant's choice. Awards generally range between $11,000 and $25,000, depending on actual costs.

The second type of scholarship is a cultural ambassador scholarship for either three or six months of intensive language training and cultural immersion in another country. Funding, not to exceed $12,000, is provided to cover round-trip transportation, tuition and fees for language training and home-stay expenses.

Applicants for the scholarships must have completed at least two years of college course work or must have a high school education and have been employed in a recognized vocation for at least two years when the scholarship begins.

Katie Conover, a returning scholarship recipient, will speak at a public seminar at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Centennial Hall. The seminar is hosted by the Juneau Gastineau Rotary Club (The Breakfast Club). Conover spent the 1999-2000 academic year in New Zealand. She will be discussing the program and showing slides of her experiences.

Rotary members will also be on hand to answer questions about the programs. For more information, contact Gastineau Rotary Foundation Chairman Robert Tonkin at 463-1554 or e-mail him at rt@gci.net.

The Ambassadorial Scholarship Program supports the mission of the nonprofit Rotary Foundation, which is to further international understanding and world peace by increasing awareness and respect for cultural differences.
