Juneau Tennis Association - Outdoor doubles tennis tournament: This tournament starts at 5 p.m. on Friday at Cope Park and ends about 6 p.m. on Sunday. If it starts raining, matches will move to the Valley location of JRC/The Alaska Club. The tourney is co-sponsored by JRC/The Alaska Club and the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation. The tournament is open to everyone and features the following doubles divisions - men's open A/B, men's open, women's open A/B, women's open and mixed. All participants are guaranteed at least two matches. The entry fee is $15 per event and participants are limited to two events. Entries close at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24. Southeast Road Runners - Mount Roberts Tram Run: Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the lower station of the Mount Roberts Tram for 9 a.m. race start. Runners will run from the lower tram station up South Franklin Street to 6th Street, where they will access the Mount Roberts Trail and run to the cross. This run is about three miles long and features 1,800 feet in elevation gain with some steep inclines. Bring warm clothing (race officials will carry extra clothing to the top of the tram). Juneau Rifle and Pistol Club - High-power hunter/sporter rifle and match/service meet: Meet at 9 a.m. at the Hank Harmon Rifle Range (Mile 1.5 Montana Creek Road), shooting starts 10 a.m. after a range safety meeting. This meet is designed to help sharpen your shooting skills before the opening of deer season on Aug. 1. The shooter will choose to shoot from either 100 or 200 yards for the four-position meet. Southeast Road Runners club - Frank Maier Marathon and Douglas Island Half-Marathon: Marathoners meet at 6:30 a.m. at Sandy Beach for 7 a.m. race start (a 6 a.m. start time is available for slower runners). Half-marathoners meet at 8:30 a.m. at Sandy Beach for 9 a.m. race start. Marathon course is TAC-certified at 26.2 miles, half-marathon course is 13.1 miles. Marathon entry fee is $30, which includes t-shirt and a custom finisher's medal. Half-marathon fee is $15 (pre-registration) and $18 (day-of-race). Juneau Gun Club - FRANK Committee fund-raising day at the range: Worried about a possible Legislative or Capitol move? Well, shoot. Meet from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Juneau Gun Club, Mile 0.5 Montana Creek Road, for a day of trapshooting and other shotgun events. Money raised benefits the FRANK Committee (Fiscally Responsible Alaskans Needing Knowledge), which tries to educate voters about the costs of moving the state government out of Juneau. There is also a barbecue from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., a cowboy action shooting demonstration at noon and a gun dog demonstration at 4 p.m. Members of the FRANK Committee and the Alaska Committee will make presentations during the barbecue. Juneau Yacht Club Sailing Squadron - Rum Cup Challenge races, Round 3: Two-day event features a run from Mayflower Island (Douglas Harbor) to Point Hilda on Saturday and a run from Point Young to Sheep Creek on Sunday. There will be a beach bonfire Saturday night at the anchorage due west of Admiralty Cove in Young's Bay. Racing starts at 10 a.m. each day and is open to any single-hulled sailboat at least 21 feet long. A handicapping system is used so liveaboards can compete with racing sailboats. Sailboats must complete at least four of the eight legs of the series in order to be ranked in the final point standings. There is a mandatory pre-race captain's meeting at 8 a.m. at the Aurora Harbormaster's office. Ultimate Players of Southeast Alaska - UPSEA Invitational Tournament: This Ultimate Frisbee event features games from 9 a.m. through 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. The tourney features teams from Juneau, Sitka and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. There will be round-robin games on Saturday and a double-elimination bracket on Sunday. Thunder Mountain Sports Camps - Registration is open for these popular youth sports camps run by the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation. The Basic Soccer Camp, for ages 7-12, takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 29 to Aug. 2 at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park (fee $90). The other camps are already in progress or finished for the summer. Local memorials for Wes Coyner - A memorial will be held to remember the life of local duathlete Wes Coyner, 74, who collapsed and died July 14 just short of the finish line at the Duathlon National Championships in Carlsbad, Calif. At 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, the Coyner family will scatter Wes' ashes in a brief ceremony at Granite Creek Basin, about four miles up Perseverance Trail (allow enough time to hike to the site). Summer physicals for Juneau-Douglas High School athletes - Sports physicals for high school athletes are available at Zach Gordon Youth Center from 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting on July 16. Carl Bausler, who works at the Juneau-Douglas High School Teen Health Center during the school year, gives the free physicals during the summers at Zach Gordon. The service is available to incoming freshmen and returning high school students only. Parents or guardians need to sign a consent form before the physical, which is available at Zach Gordon. All high school athletes need to have current physicals on file before being allowed to participate in team practices. Appointments are needed for each physical. Juneau-Douglas High School football practice - The Crimson Bears' first "Midnight Madness" football practice of the season takes place at 12:01 a.m. early Monday morning, July 29, at the Lena Point upper field.
