JUNEAU - Write a song about the Alaskan Hotel & Bar and win $100. Or write the best song of the night - about anything - and win $300.
It sounds simple, but it's not when you consider the level of talent expected for the South Franklin Street bar's first Original Songwriter's Challenge at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 26.
At least 15 songwriters had signed up for the contest one week before the event, said organizer George Bryson, a longtime Juneau musician and an audio and electronic engineer.
The entrants include well-known locals such as Bobby Cole, Andy Engstrom, Scott Fry and Jay Scott, plus many newcomers. Bryson will be disc jockey in between sets.
"Basically, it's a chance for the songwriters to be heard for the first time," said show organizer George Bryson. "They never get heard on (Thursday) jam night, because everyone's so loud."
The writer of the night's best song wins $300. The best song about the bar wins $100. Gift certificates, hats and T-shirts also will be handed out as prizes.
