Juneau's Gastineau Channel Little League All-Stars beat Kenai twice this weekend to claim the Alaska State Senior Division (age 15-16) Little League Softball Tournament title at Hayes Field in Soldotna.

Juneau beat Kenai 6-1 on Friday and 4-2 on Saturday to claim the championship.

"It was our pitching and our defense," Juneau manager Dennis Powers said. "The only runs scored against us were unearned."

In Friday's game, Andrea Doerflinger led Juneau at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. She also started the game on the mound and pitched four innings of hitless ball with two walks and two strikeouts.

Ashleigh Wilwert went 1-for-3 with a run and Ambyr Benson was 1-for-1 for Juneau's only other hits. Sammy Roguska scored three times and Madison Massey had two runs. Alicia Maryott threw three innings in relief of Doerflinger and allowed one run, one hit and no walks while striking out one.

On Saturday, Maryott was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run while Doerflinger was 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Wilwert, Rachelle Miller and Kayla Janelle had Juneau's other hits, with Janelle, Massey and Ashley Kelly scoring runs.

Massey started for Juneau and went three innings with two unearned runs, two hits (including a double) and no strikeouts. Doerflinger relieved Massey and allowed two hits over the final four innings with four strikeouts.

Juneau took a 3-0 lead with one run in the first inning and two in the second, but Kenai scored twice in the third to make the game close. Juneau added an insurance run in the fifth inning.

"They were throwing lollypop pitches like they did last year, and it took awhile for us to adjust," Powers said.

Juneau now heads to Portland, Ore., for the divisional tournament July 30 through Aug. 3. Juneau will play in a three-team round-robin with the Washington and Oregon champions where each team faces the others twice to open the tournament, and the top two teams will meet in Tuesday's single-elimination championship game.

Juneau plays Oregon on Saturday, both Oregon and Washington on Sunday and then plays Washington on Monday in the round-robin part of the tourney, where each team has at least one doubleheader.
