Singles Summer Slam Tennis Tournament - This singles tennis tournament is organized by adult players and hosted by the JRC/The Alaska Club to benefit the Juneau-Douglas High School tennis team. There will be men's and women's singles tournaments with three different skills division. Cost is $10 for JRC/The Alaska Club members and $15 for non-members. Juneau One Club Championship and Used Golf Equipment Sale - The Juneau One Club Championship and Used Golf Equipment Sale will be held Saturday, July 29, at the Mendenhall Golf Course from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prizes for first, second and third place, closest to the pin and a drawing for a round trip flight to Gustavus or Haines or Wings of Alaska. Chilkoot Trail Hike - SAGA's Eagle Valley Center will be leading a hike of the historic gold rush trail of 1898 for youth and teens ages 14-16. The cost is $395 per person and includes meals, supervision, trail permits, ferry north and south, shuttle to trailhead, White Pass and Yukon Route train rides. Juneau Parks and Recreation volleybal packets available - Juneau Parks and Recreation men's and women's volleyball team manager packets are available at the Parks and Recreation office, located on the second floor of the municipal building, Room 218. Team registration will be conducted on Thursday, Aug. 10, at 5:15 p.m. in the assembly chambers. Late registration will be taken Friday, Aug. 11, at the Parks and Recreation office. JDHS tennis team practice - The Juneau-Douglas High School tennis team will begin practice on Aug. 1, 10 a.m. to noon at JRC/The Alaska Club valley location. Attending each practice is important to be considered for travel to the Fairbanks Invitational on Aug. 25. JRC/The Alaska Club membership is not required, however, a sports physical is required. Juneau Youth Football League registration - Registration to play in the Juneau Youth Football League will take place on July 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the football field gear shed at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. Football officials needed - The Juneau-Douglas Officials Association is looking for individuals to be football officials. Officiating is a great way to not just watch the games, but to become an active participant in them. Officials are responsible for both Juneau Youth Football Association games and the Juneau-Douglas High School games. High School Volleyball Clinic - The high school volleyball clinic for students in grades 9-12 will take place July 28-30 at the University of Alaska Southeast recreation center. Kids' Camps at JRC/The Alaska Club valley location - Camps will be going on through August 18 at the JRC/The Alaska Club valley location. Women's Classic Soccer League - The Women's Classic Soccer League, sponsored by the Capital City Soccer League, will start in early July. No previous soccer experience is necessary while new and older players are welcome to join. Games are once a week and usually on Sundays or Mondays. Treadwell Arena Summer Schedule - Treadwell Arena will host a variety of summer activities this season, which will run from June 5 to August 11. There will be open gym Monday-Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be drop-in lacrosse from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday. Drop in roller hockey for kids 12 and under will be held Tuesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by roller hockey for athletes 13 and older from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Every Friday night, there will be disco roller rink form 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Info: 586-0410 or www.juneau.org/parksrec/icerink.
Thunder Mountain Sports Camps - Registration has begun for Thunder Mountain Sports Camps. Thunder Mountain Sports Camps have put on soccer and baseball camps for Juneau Parks and Recreation for the last 16 years. The camps feature a positive environment along with instruction from local coaches, along with high school and college coaches from the Lower 48. Volunteer soccer coaches needed - The Juneau Parks and Recreation Department is looking for people who are knowledgeable about soccer and enjoy working with youth to be soccer coaches. Interested coaches need to file a volunteer application and a copy of an Interested Persons Report. Coaches may be at least 15 years old. The season runs from July 8 to September 16. Juneau Women's Golf League - The Juneau Women's Golf League is looking for women interested in playing golf. No prior experience is necessary to participate. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Evening masters swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
