Glacier Highway needs maintenance to keep cyclists, walkers safe

There is one viable route for bicycle commuting between the Mendenhall Valley and downtown. The endpoints are good routes and are safe. The problem is with Glacier Highway through Lemon Creek and Twin Lakes. It is unsafe.

Sound off on the important issues at

It is one month into summer and the shoulders have not been painted. The painted lane would give a margin of safety for motorists and bicyclists.

Also, due to heavy traffic, the shoulders are frequently covered with mud and gravel. Often, as vehicles pass, there are clouds of dust and debris. The shoulders themselves are pot-holed and rough. Both for safety and maintenance this should be improved. Note that the Mendenhall Back Loop Road and the pedestrian crossing at Whittier are not marked.
