Juneau Freewheelers cycling club - Jack and Jill Time Trial: Meet at 6 p.m. at the False Outer Point parking lot for a 6:30 p.m. race start. This event is for two-person teams, with one male cyclist and one female. One team member will ride from False Outer Point to the Douglas Bridge, a distance of about 12 miles, while the other rider will return to False Outer Point. Southeast Road Runners club - Eaglecrest Road Race and 1-Mile Run: Meet 8:15 a.m. at the starting line at Mile 1 Fish Creek Road (the road to Eaglecrest Ski Area) for a 9 a.m. race start. There is a 5-mile course to the Eaglecrest Ski Area lodge, plus a 1-mile course for kids that starts and finishes at the lodge. NOTE: This race was originally scheduled for Aug. 14, but this event and the Treadwell Twosome Traverse originally scheduled for July 31 were switched because of time conflicts with the two race directors. Juneau-Douglas High School football team - The first practice for the varsity and junior varsity Crimson Bears takes place at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 2, at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park football field. All potential players must have an up-to-date physical exam form on file to participate. The annual JDHS Red & White scrimmage takes place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, at the football field. Juneau Parks and Rec Summer Youth Swimming Lessons - The final session of the summer youth and preschool swimming lessons will be held from 8-11 a.m. Mondays through Fridays from Aug. 2-13 at Augustus Brown Pool. Lessons cost $47.25 for the first child, $42.00 for additional immediate family members. Registration takes place July 28-30, continuing through Aug. 2 on a space-available basis. Juneau Parks and Rec men's and women's volleyball registration - Team manager packets are available at the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office, located in Room 218 of the municipal building downtown. Team registration takes place at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, in the Juneau Assembly Chambers. Late registration takes place during business hours on Friday, Aug. 6, at the Parks and Rec office. Alaskan Camp of Champions wrestling clinic - The Juneau Youth Wrestling Club is sponsoring this wrestling clinic that takes place from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 5-7, at the Marie Drake Gym. Registration before Tuesday, Aug. 3, costs $20. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Treadwell Arena summer schedule - Events through Friday, Aug. 13, include court rentals from noon to 3:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday, open in-line skating at 4-6 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, drop-in basketball at 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, drop-in roller hockey for ages 8-16 at 6-8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday nights, drop-in roller hockey for ages 17-older at 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and open in-line skating and roller rink nights from 6-8 p.m. on Fridays. On Saturday and Sunday, the rink is open for rentals only from noon to 6 p.m. Helmets, hockey gloves, shin pads and in-line skates are mandatory for in-line hockey games, and full face masks and mouth guards are required for players age 18-younger. Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center guided hikes - The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center offers twice-daily, one-hour guided hikes on the Trail of Time. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
